Jazz and Mobilio coming soon to India

Honda is soon going to present two of its very awaited cars: Jazz and Mobilio in India. While Mobilio will be launched in June this year, Jazz will arrive in the market next month i.e. July.

Mobilio will be manufactured at the Noida plant while Jazz will be produced at Tapukara plant in Rajasthan. With Mobilio, Honda will challenge Suzuki's Ertiga, also a 7 seater, the current leader in this segment. Around 45000 Mobilios will be produced every year initially, which number will be increased seeing the demand. Mobilio will be propelled with 1.5 Lt. i-DTECH diesel engine which will give a mileage of around 25-26 kmpl, segment highest. Its petrol version will be powered by very famous 1.5 Lt. i-VTECH engine.

Jazz will be a premium hatch from Honda. It will have 1.2 Lt. petrol engine and diesel versions will be having 1.5 Lt. engine. Earlier Jazz, that was discontinued by Honda from India, was a failure because of people's reluctance for premium hatchbacks and non-availability of diesel version. Now, the company hopes to revive this car in its new look.

LED TV free with Honda Brio

Honda is giving an LED TV (32 inch) free with its hatchback Brio. This is in addition to the normal free insurance for one year. Total value of these two freebies is around Rs. 45,000. The ex-showroom price of Brio starts at Rs. 4,16,000 in Delhi.

As the year 2013 is heading towards its end, more discounts can be expected from other car companies also.  Considering the high prices of fuel and weak economy, many car companies are providing very good discounts. Except some very popular models like Ford Ecosport, Honda Amaze and just launched Hyundai Grand i10, almost every car is offering freebies.  Good time to shop for cars.

Top Ten Best Selling Cars in India – October 2013

Following is the list of top ten best selling cars in India in October 2013. The numbers have been rounded off to the nearest 100.

Suzuki Alto                  22600
Suzuki Swift                19000
Suzuki Dzire                17200
Suzuki Wagon R         14300
Hyundai Grand i10      11500
Mahindra Bolero         10700
Honda Amaze               9600
Suzuki Ertiga                 7200
Hyundai Eon                 6900
Suzuki Omni                  6500

As can be seen, out of the top 10, six positions are held by Suzuki products. Suzuki is also retaining the number one overall position with 42 per cent share of the market.  In contrast to Asian automotive giants, European brands are just small dwarfs, struggling to breath.  Four European brands present in India i.e. VW, Skoda, Renault and Fiat have a combined share of six per cent which is exceeded by India’s Tata Motors alone.

Honda is moving ahead but it is stuck at its capacity limit i.e. approximately 10000 units per month.  Its second factory in Rajasthan is expected to commence production in the beginning of next year. All of its good numbers are due to Amaze, its sub 4 meter sedan. Honda is now giving a good fight to Toyota for fourth position in Indian market.

Ecosport has now come down and stands just above its main competitor Renault Duster on the ranking ladder. Its insane waiting periods running somewhere around 8 to 10 months are making people cancel their bookings and go for other options. And these periods are for diesel models. For petrol (Ecoboost and normal 1.5 lt. engine), nobody knows whether and when the delivery will take place.

Honda Brio - Need for Interior Designer

Brio is Honda’s first small car in India.  First and till date the only small car from Honda in India. It came here in 2011 and since then two years have passed but it could never be a car selling in decent numbers.  It has almost everything that can make it buyer’s choice.  It has the best petrol engine that is refined, silent, fuel efficient and powerful. It has with it the name of Honda reliability which is so famous worldwide and a service network that is small but expending in India. Honda was never considered by car users as a brand whose service and maintenance costs are sky high, unlike some European brands (Volkswagen, Skoda etc) nor its cars require too much maintenance and repairs (unlike Ford, Fiat etc).

Brio looks futuristic from outside and has a design that will not be considered outdated for quite a long time.

In contradiction to this, Ford’s Figo looked outdated on the very day of its launch. Brio looks spacious inside and it is actually spacious inside. Some of its competitors like Swift from Suzuki and i10 from Hyundai give a claustrophobic feeling for the rear seat occupants, although Hyundai has tried to correct that feeling to some extent in the new Grand i10.  And these two cars, i10 and Swift are selling in very good numbers, Swift around 17,000 units per month and i10 around 6,000 units. We can safely assume that out of these 17,000 units for Swift, around 5000 are petrol units as the ratio between diesel units and petrol units is about 5:2.  i10, on the other hand, had only petrol model till recently when Grand i10 joined it.

So, against 5000 Swifts and 6000 i10s being sold per month, Brio manages around 1600.  One reason, we may say, is the very small network of Honda dealerships compared to Hyundai and Suzuki in India. But that is not the reason as has been proved by the success of Ford’s Ecosport and Duster from Renault, both of which are having network smaller than that of Honda.

The problem with Brio is that it has a small boot, quite small.  But most of the people would not mind it.  The major problem with Brio lies inside. It has a dashboard that is good in quality but does not look like so.  For many people, it is kind of cheap although it is not.  There is no symmetry in the structure of the dashboard.

   Brio

When we compare it with that of Toyota Liva’s dashboard, none of them is pleasing to eyes. Although Honda’s dashboard’s quality is good, it looks like an eye-sore. On the contrary, when we sit in i10 or Grand i10, a sense of richness fills the eyes.

Grand i10

Swift dashboard also is good. Then why so much cost cutting, Mr Honda? Does it save some money by making the dashboard asymmetrical? Moreover, changing the dashboard is not that difficult like changing the engine or changing the length, width etc of the car. If there is just one small negative thing, remove it rather then continuing with it and saying that petrol only cars do not sell well in India. Another model from Honda in India, Amaze is selling well although having the same dashboard but it sells because it has a diesel heart. And it is priced quite competitively with a very large boot. So, to avoid Brios dusting in the dealership yards, please hire a good interior designer, Mr Honda.

Top Ten Best Selling Cars in India - September 2013

Following is the list of top ten best selling cars in India during September 2013.  All figures have been rounded off to nearest 100.

Suzuki Alto             23600
Suzuki Swift            16800
Suzuki Dzire           16700
Suzuki Wagon R     15400
Mahindra Bolero      8900
Hyundai i10 Grand   8400
Honda Amaze           6700
Hyundai Eon             6300
Ford Ecosport           6200
Hyundai i20              5700

In spite of fierce competition from other manufacturers, Suzuki India has maintained its lead in the car market with a very big margin. It has a market share of 44 per cent against its nearest rival i.e. Hyundai which has a share of 15 per cent. The Hindustan Motors-Mitsubishi combine is at the bottom of this list with just 170 units and second from the bottom is Fiat with 1086 units sold during the month.

Hyundai's latest offering Grand i10 has proved to be a blockbuster as it has entered the top 10 list with 8400 units. The older version of this car i.e. i10 has one drawback - absence of diesel engine. That has been taken care of by Grand i10 which has a 1.1 liter diesel engine. A very widespread service network of Hyundai has further increased the sales of this new car which is wider, longer and has better ride quality than the older version.

Duster Dwindles as Ecosport Rises

Duster, when launched in India, changed the fortunes of Renault as it has been the only successful car from it. People thronged the Renault showrooms to grab this small SUV which at that time seemed so affordable.  Soon, long waiting lines were formed and inspite of price hike by the company, this SUV was in demand and waiting continued.

Meanwhile, news of Ecosport coming soon was out but that coming soon was not 'soon' as Ford continued to test this much talked about smaller SUV.  Tests were conducted for a quite long time and ultimately in June this year, Ford released it at a price that startled the consumers and market pundits. The line of people waiting outside the Renault showrooms shifted to Ford showrooms. People loved the exterior, build quality and also the interior. Demand was so high that Ford had to stop bookings for certain variants.  It also raised prices.  But the Ecosport has continued ahead of its rival i.e. Duster which has come down from more than 6000 units in March 2013 to less than 3000 in August 2013. The graph below shows this decline -

On the other hand, Ecosport started with 4000 units in June this year and has now gone up to 5300 units during August 2013. But because of supply constraints, Ford is unable to meet the demand and some of the prospective buyers are cancelling their bookings which is not a good thing for the company.
