How Toyota has destroyed the Quality in Q Class

It was in December 2010 when Toyota launched the Etios, a sedan in India and termed it as Q class.  Q was for quality, said Toyota.  After some time, Etios Liva, hatchback version of this sedan was launched in June 2011.  People expected very highly of these two models from Toyota.  Products from Japanese car makers particularly Honda, Toyota and Suzuki are very much in demand in India.  Toyota’s earlier line of products i.e. Innova, Altis and Fortuner were very well established and doing well in the market.  As such, a high level of quality was expected from Toyota in its Liva and Etios models.

However, contrary to expectations and much contrary to its Q badge, these cars have anything but quality.  Once you enter these cars, the first impression that comes to the mind is cheap, cheap and cheap.  Everything inside the car seems so cheap that you can compare it to a very basic, 800 cc car from Suzuki i.e. Maruti 800 which costs less than half of the Liva.  The display cluster is in the middle of the dashboard and it is not just the position of this display but also the shape that irritates you and reminds you of the fact that Toyota designers were hell bent on presenting the most disgusting feeling inside the car.  The dashboard design is just irritating and qualityless.

Coming to the quality of doors, you can not expect the solidness and compactness of European cars in Japanese cars.  But then, not having proper insulation in the doors is something which could have been avoided.  It was not done and the result – everything unwanted like water, noise, dust, insects entering the car.  This was some basic thing that could have been thought about.  Complaints for this aspect have become a routine among consumers.
Cost cutting is so deep that nobody in Toyota thought about the engine noise entering the cabin.  And everybody knows that Toyota’s engines are not like those of Honda’s or Suzuki’s k series or Hyundai’s kappa series which are super silent.  Noise, vibration and harshness levels are too much for the people inside the car.
While Toyota has tried to make some changes in the recent versions, it has left a bad taste among consumers who were very impressed till some time ago by the reliability of its cars.  Interesting thing is that Honda’s Brio, whose quality of material and engine is just awesome is priced lower than Liva.  Liva’s base model, comparable to Brio’s base model feature wise, is priced at Rs. 402000 against Brio’s price of Rs. 395000 (at New Delhi).  So, Toyota can not say that cheaper car brings cheaper materials.  It has to think about it.
Liva and Etios are other wise very good for the space, ride quality and long, hassle free life of engines, characteristics much desired in India.  But cost cutting and bad designing by Toyota has turned Q for Quality into Q for Question mark on Quality of Toyota products.

    Owners of Luxury cars, Beware!

Police in Italy is stopping the luxury cars in Italy to help tax authorities there.  At checkpoints, including one adjacent to the fashionable Corso Como, the police got the driver’s licence and registration, which they passed on to the national tax agency. The tax authorities will use the data to check if the cars’ owners had declared enough income — and of course paid the right amount of income taxes — to justify their lifestyles.
It was at least the fifth raid targetting wealthy Italians since a December 30 sweep at the posh Cortina d’Ampezzo ski resort, where 251 high-end cars were stopped, including Ferrari and Lamborghini supercars, Bloomberg Businessweek reports in its February 13 issue. Rome, Portofino on the Italian Riviera and Florence have also been targetted.

“I’ve been stopped three times in the last few weeks by authorities because I’m driving a luxury SUV,” says Andrea, a Range Rover owner and entrepreneur in Italy’s wealthy northeast. “It seems like the McCarthy era in America. You’re guilty by suspicion.”

The 43-year-old, who declined to give his last name for fear of attracting the attention of Italy’s tax agency, now plans to sell the SUV he bought last May. He expects to get at most €40,000 ($52,400) for a car that cost him more than €100,000. “Dealers are full of luxury cars. No one wants to buy them now,” the businessman said.

    Luxury sweep
Italian authorities are applying to luxury car owners the same logic they displayed more than a year ago, when tax agents started tracking down the owners of yachts berthed in Italy’s harbours to see if they were current on their tax payments.

In the raid in Cortina D’Ampezzo, tax agents found that 42 luxury car owners had declared income of less than €30,000 for 2010 and 2009. Another 19 luxury cars were owned by businesses which posted a loss in the previous year. The sweep in Florence discovered a builder with no tax record who was driving a Mercedes with his wife who was receiving social assistance. Tax officials also found a German owner of a BMW X5 SUV with no declared income, according to the website of the tax agency’s Florence office.

This is serious stuff for the government, which estimates that tax evasion costs the country about €120 billion a year in lost revenue.

“The ownership of a luxury car highlights a level of spending and a standard of living that are often not reconcilable with the income declared by the owner,” said Carmelo Piancaldini, a manager in the inspections unit of Agenzia delle Entrate, Italy’s tax authority. “If one is transparent with the tax agency and buys a luxury car, he doesn’t have to worry.”

    Record costs
The collection effort is part of Prime Minister Mario Monti’s plan to curb record borrowing costs on Italy’s €1.9-trillion debt and avoid following Greece, Portugal and Ireland which all had to seek bailouts.  Monti has also raised taxes on luxury goods, including expensive cars. The owner of a €316,000 Lamborghini Aventador, for instance, will now have to pay about €8,400 a year in taxes, an increase of €6,600.

While tax authorities reject being the cause for a slump in car sales, the measures are having an impact. Marco Santucci, general manager of Tata Motors’ Jaguar brand in Italy, said orders for high-end cars “decreased substantially” in the final months of 2011, dragged down by the taxes. Sales are shifting towards cheaper versions with smaller engines, he said.

    Slumping demand
Demand for vehicles from the likes of Fiat SpA’s Ferrari and Maserati brands and Volkswagen AG’s Lamborghini slumped 53 per cent in January, with just 66 supercars sold, according to Anfia, the association of Italian car makers. The new taxes and high-profile dragnets have also sent exotic car prices down 20 per cent, according to dealer association Federauto.

The slump in luxury sales adds pressure on the Italian auto market as the economy teeters on the brink of recession. Sales may fall to the lowest level since 1985 this year on the weight of the budget tightening measures, according to Fiat Chief Executive Officer Sergio Marchionne.

    Luxury tax
Still, for Ferrari, which earns higher profit margins than any other Fiat unit, it’s not the end of the world. There’s plenty of demand outside Italy for the company’s sports cars. “Italy isn’t a concern for Ferrari as it sells its cars abroad,” Marchionne said last month in Detroit. Relying on Italy would be a problem, because “demand is not there — austerity is impacting everywhere in the country.”

Monti’s new luxury vehicle tax targets owners of cars whose engines have more than 251 horsepower. The tax may raise about €165 million this year, according to Unrae, Italy’s association of foreign car makers.

“It’s hard to imagine that any other European country having luxury car producers contributing significantly to employment would have introduced a tax” on supercars, says Maserati CEO Harald Wester. The government also increased duties on fuel. All told, the extra levies will cost Italian drivers €5.1 billion by the end of 2012, Unrae estimates.

3 Million US$ Penalty on BMW

BMW will have to pay a $3 million US civil penalty for delays in reporting auto-safety defects and recalls of about 338,700 vehicles in 2010.

Munich-based BMW’s fine is the largest related to safety by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the investigator of automobile defects and regulator of recalls, since the record $16.4 million levied against Toyota Motor Corp in 2010.

The regulator reviewed 16 instances of recalls which included X5 and X6 sport-utility vehicles, 7 Series and 5 Series Grand Turismo sports sedans, 1 Series cars and motorcycles, according to agency records. BMW has 30 days to pay the fine to the US treasury.

“It’s critical to the safety of the driving public that defects and recalls are reported in short order,” NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said in a statement on Thursday.

“NHTSA expects all manufacturers to address automotive safety issues quickly and in a forthright manner.”

10 Millionth car from Suzuki India rolls out

India's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India today said it has crossed the 10 million units milestone of cumulative sales in the domestic market since it started selling cars 29 years back.

"The 10 millionth vehicle, a Red Swift Vxi, was dispatched to Coimbatore today morning from the company's Manesar plant," the company said in a statement.

"The next five million domestic sales have been achieved in six years," the company said.

The company that started off as a joint venture between the government of India and Japan's Suzuki Motor Corp, had transformed personal transportation in India with its M800 model, which till date continues to find many buyers across the country.  While Maruti 800 and Omni powered sales for almost two decades, the Alto has been India's best-selling car for the last over seven years, the company said.

In recent years, the success of WagonR and Swift, among others, has accelerated the company's progress towards the 10 million mark, it added.

The price for the highest version i.e. E9 is Rs.10.25 lakh, ex-showroom at Delhi.

    Discounts continue even in February

The economic slowdown and high petrol prices have affected car manufacturers badly.  The discounts which start before Diwali festival season in October-November and peak in December with the year end, are still continuing although it is February now.  Discounts are generally for petrol models only.  Diesel versions, on the other hand, have long waiting lists.  Only a few petrol cars like Jazz, Brio from Honda and Verna from Hyundai command waiting period.

    M&M in race for Saab

Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), the Indian automaker, has signed a confidentiality agreement with the Swedish Automaker Saab.  M&M is one of the four companies showing interest in buying Saab.  Reports say that M&M is finalizing its bid with the help of its banker Kotak Mahindra.

Sources said that the M&M team is at Saab’s Trollhattan factory in Sweden to work out the deal. Sources also said the top brass of M&M auto and its M&A team will meet later this week and take a final call on the structure of the bid.

Senior officials of M&M refused to comment.

The biggest hurdle in the revival of Saab is regarding technology, which the former owner General Motors (GM) has refused to part with. Sources said GM has made it clear that it will not give intellectual property rights (IPRs) to any buyer for the 9-4x and 9-5 models, leading to the failure of an earlier bid by Chinese automaker Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile. Since then, Youngman has put in a revised offer of 3 billion crowns ($446 million) for Saab, according to news reports.

Criminal case against MD, Volkswagen and others

A court in Delhi has instructed the Police to lodge a case on a complaint against Managing Director of Volkswagen, directors of its authorised car dealer and a official of transport department on the issue of illegal charges levied on buyers.

The complaint filed by advocate Rajiv Ranjan Raj alleged levying of illegal charges by car dealers and sought lodging of FIR for cheating, criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust and for offences under Prevention of Corruption Act.

He made car dealer Bhasin Motors, its four directors, MD of Volkswagen India Pvt Ltd and a Motor Licensing Officer of Delhi transport department as party in the case.  He said Bhasin Motors charged him Rs 3,911 as handling and number plate charges apart from VAT March last year.

    Mark Gorton, the Anti-automobile Crusader

Times of India has reported that New York entrepreneur Mark Gorton, an anti-automobile crusader, is currently in India to spread the message about just how wrong an automobilebased transport system is for the world.

“India has the historical advantage of being able to see the damage that automobiles have done to cities in Europe, America and China. It can decide not to commit the same mistake,’’ he said.

Gorton firmly believes in what Enrique Penalosa, a former mayor of Bogota, once said — you can have a city that is friendly to cars or friendly to people. You cannot have both.  Bumper-to-bumper traffic on urban streets is no coincidence and is a reflection of poor planning, said Gorton.  He believes in the need for a government policy, which works towards automobile suppression that includes punitive taxes on cars. “In Shanghai and Singapore, you need a permit to own a car.

“In Tokyo, you first need proof of parking before you can buy a car,’’ the anti-automobile crusader added.

Delhi, for instance, is trying to do the physically impossible by filling the streets with automobiles though there’s no space to fit them, he said.  On the other hand, he points to cycling tracks in cities like Ahmedabad.

“Much of Europe is now looking at designing roads for bicycles. It’s only when streets have designated cycle tracks and are safe for cyclists that people will want to ride bicycles,’’ he said.

His grouse against automobiles goes beyond the obvious concerns over pollution and congestion. He is concerned with the intangible fallout of living on a street that is crowded by cars and has little space to walk.
“When there were fewer cars on New York streets, the city was safer for children, who could cross over, walk to school or run to a park.  A child’s world was, say, a kilometre in diametre. It has now been reduced to a few metre in front of the house,’’ Gorton said.

He said this may well be a cause for childhood obesity, as children have no place to walk on the streets. “You now need an adult to accompany a child from one place to another,’’ he said.
He points to studies which show that on an average people, who live on streets having heavy vehicular traffic have fewer friends in the neighbourhood than those who dwell on quieter streets.  Gorton is armed with data to prove cars are among the most inefficient means of transport.

“Before New York moved to a transport system dependent on cars, the system was rail-based. Today, there are 370,000 fewer people entering New York’s Central Business District each weekday than there were in 1948,’’ he said.

Hyundai i-flow concept car at Plastindia 2012

Press release from BASF regarding i-flow, concept car based on collaboraion between Hyundai and BASF

Delhi, India – February 1, 2012 – BASF, the world’s leading chemical company, invites visitors of Plastindia 2012 to be amongst the first in India to view the i-flow, a one-of-a-kind concept car based on a unique collaboration between BASF and Hyundai Motor Group. The breathtaking design of the i-flow is coupled with a wide range of innovative features, which are beneficial to the environment as well as eye-opening to many carmaker and car lovers. The i-flow will be displayed at the BASF booth during Plastindia 2012 from February 2 – 3, 2012.

BASF's contributions to the i-flow allow greater fuel efficiency, reduced environmental impact, freedom of design as well as greater comfort and safety. As a result, the concept car offers important new approaches to sustainable mobility. In view of these energy-efficient contributions in the i-flow project, BASF was granted the ÖkoGlobe award, an international environmental award in the area of mobility, sponsored by the University of Duisburg-Essen and spearheaded by automotive expert Prof. Ferdinand Dudenhöffer.

A concept for the seat frame of the i-flow provides an example for how lightweight construction materials can help conserve resources. It features Ultramid® Balance, a polyamide that consists to 60 percent of renewable raw materials, as well as other thermoplastics and energy-absorbing foams. The joint goal was to save as much weight as possible by using plastic components.

Luquafleece® is a moisture-absorbing material: When incorporated into seats it ensures that drivers and their passengers enjoy a pleasant seating climate even at the height of summer. Elastollan®, a thermo-plastic polyurethane elastomer, can be used for high-quality surfaces. It is abrasion-proof and can be produced in a wide range of both light and dark interior colors. The BASF polyurethanes material Elastoskin® is used for the dashboard and for interior automotive parts. It is characterized by an exceptional optic and haptics, combined with a pleasant soft touch. At the same time it provides the highest freedom in design for colors, textures and geometries.

The i-flow's energy concept provides an impressive example of high tech. The modern diesel engine is encapsulated with a rigid foam polyurethane insulation system that protects both the engine and the environment. On short trips and in city traffic especially, engines are slow to reach the optimum operating temperature or cool down quickly. The thermal engine insulation lessens this effect, reducing both emissions and fuel consumption. In addition, a harvesting system using the thermoelectric effect converts heat from the exhaust gases into electrical energy that helps power auxiliary systems. This results in significant fuel savings.

A new catalyst from BASF combines four technologies to cut emissions in just two components. As a result, it is possible to satisfy increasingly stringent emission standards for automobiles at a relatively favorable cost. At the same time, the new solution saves both weight and space.

Passive heat management can be used to reduce energy consumption even further. For example, a wide range of infrared-transparent and infrared-reflecting pigments in the car interior result in cooler plastic surfaces for the dashboard, seat and center console. Pigments from BASF's Sicotan®, Sicopal® and Lumogen® ranges provide very dark or black surfaces that remain distinctly cooler when exposed to sunlight. The result: greater comfort and less energy for air conditioning.

Modern vehicle interiors aim for maximum comfort. The BASF innovation Steron® is a soft-touch coating technology. Various textures even with a high complexity can be designed, varying from soft velvet to a smooth silky touch, always keeping a natural feel.

A literally brilliant effect is provided by a new mirror-like paint from BASF Coatings: The Liquid Metal basecoat makes the i-flow look as though it is chrome-plated rather than painted. In addition, the innovative iGloss clearcoat makes the paint surface both scratch-resistant and weather-resistant.
